To wake in the morning
Of Christmas Day
And see the smiling faces
Of my five children
As the sun rises, the early birds
Rummage through their stockings
For tiny little gifts while
Waiting in anticipation
For everyone to wake
Though their ages range
From three to twenty
Each one still looks forward
To Christmas morning
There is an excitement in the air
One by one they will take turns
Opening their presents
Not realizing they have
The best give in front of them
Their family
Each one brings a special
Gift into my life
They make me laugh and cry
We’ve been through many hard times
But I believe the worst is over
It has been many years since
We’ve all been together to
Celebrate the birth of
Jesus Christ our savior
How wonderful it will be
On Christmas Day to embrace
The time we have together
And to make memories that
Will last a lifetime

To bump your poetry up a notch, think about adding some figurative language--a metaphor or two, some imagery, some symbolism.
