“AAAAAHHHHH!” Lavern’s shriek caused Kevin and I a bit of confusion. We could not distinguish if it was happiness or disappointment. Lavern held the title and keys to her first car in her hands. I thrust my elbow into Kevin’s side in reaction to his vigorously shaking me at the shoulder. “Yeah, yeah, I see it. So what?” I had mixed feelings. Well, I guess it’s her gift that will be benefiting me.
We loaded the remaining various sized and wrapped gifts into the hatchback of Lavern’s Escort and headed to Papa and Mimaw’s house. At our grandparent’s home, we had more gifts to open. This time, Kevin went first. Mimaw had knitted socks to match his underwear; only this time, the stitching noted that he is “Racin’ to Mimaw’s!” Papa made Kevin promise that he would show “all his little buddies” how much his Mimaw cares for him. I teased, “Haaa-ha!”
Lavern decided to go next. Mimaw had crocheted purple seat covers, Lavern’s favorite color! She was ecstatic and hurried off to dress her seats and take Papa for a ride. I wanted to open my gift in private, but I knew better. Off came the paper and out came yarn and two knitting needles! Papa said that he was for sure that I would make him something fine. I smiled, kissed Papa and Mimaw and whispered to Kevin, “Let me know when you want a sweater to match your underwear and socks!” He rolled his eyes and playfully pushed me away.
“Okay everybody, it’s time to unwrap our family gift.” Papa’s commanding voice drew us to the dining room. In a circle we stood, holding hands, snuggling close and bowing our heads. Papa lifted his humble voice to God, “Father in Heaven, Creator of life, our family praise you. We thank you Lord God for choosing us for Your work and for one another. Thank you for allowing us to honor this tradition of family again…” Papa paused so that he could grab the gift. We each wrote a note to one family member thanking, and complimenting him/her and place it into what we call the family gift box. Papa reads the notes and includes them in his prayer as thanks to God.
Finally it was time for one last gift for all; Papa “ripped” open the turkey and said, “Let’s eat!”

A few minor grammatical and punctuation glitches to edit, but nothing too distracting.
