Granny Smith sat down wearily in her favourite chair. She had been busy all day, looking after five year old grandson Jamie, as his mother was in the hospital about to have her second baby. Now he was in bed and fast asleep, or so she thought.
Just as Granny closed her eyes for a well earned doze, she felt a tug on her skirt. Startled she turned to find Jamie looking at her with wide open eyes.
“Gran”, he said, ‘I don’t want to go to sleep. Can we look in your special book again?”
At once Granny knew what he wanted. She had a scrap book where she kept all her special Christmas cards received over the years. Jamie knew all about it but he never tired of listening to the stories she told from some of the cards.
She went to the bookshelf and took down the very precious book of Christmas Cards. Sitting Jamie on her lap she began to turn the pages. Now and then she stopped and told him the story behind the picture on the card.
The first card she stopped at was of a lady on a donkey with a man by her side. “Jamie that is Mary and Joseph. They have come a long long way from their home in Nazareth to a town called Bethlehem. They have come because the government wants them to register their names there. They are very tired, especially Mary, who is going to have a baby.’
‘Like my Mommy?” Jamie asked.
“Yes, Jamie,” Granny replied.
Granny turned over some more pages, and then she stopped again. “Look Jamie,’ she said, ‘do you see what looks like an animal stable and a man and a lady with a little tiny baby. That is Mary and Joseph, and now the baby Jesus is there too. God gave the baby to Mary to care for him until He was old enough to do God’s work and become the Saviour.”
“Will Mommy’s baby be as tiny as that?” Jamie asked.
“Why yes,’ Granny answered, “and he is God’s gift too.”
“Why aren’t they in a house Gran?”
“Well Jamie, the town of Bethlehem was so crowded there was no room anywhere, but the owner of the stable said they could stay there. It was not the best place but it was safe and warm.”
Granny turned some more pages. “Look Jamie,” she said as she stopped again, “you see those shepherds on the hill with the sheep. They are looking into the sky. An angel has just told them not to be afraid for he brings them good news. The news is that a Saviour has been born in Bethlehem, and that they would find him lying in a stable. Then they heard some wonderful singing.
“Do you know what those shepherds did Jamie, they left their sheep and went down the hill to look for that baby. Do you think they were still afraid?”
“No, no,’ said Jamie. “I think they were happy.”
Once more Granny turned the pages. She stopped at a very colourful one with the picture of men looking like kings. They are kneeling in front of Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus.
“Jamie,” she said, “these are wise men. They have come on a long journey, following a star in the sky, to see the baby. They have brought Him gifts. They know he is very special. They believe he is a king.’
“I believe he is a king too, Granny. I wish I could give him a present.”
“You can Jamie, you can. Give yourself to Jesus. Tell Him you love Him and want to live for Him. He loves you very much.”
“Dear Jesus, I love you,” Jamie said. ‘I give myself to you as a present. Amen.”
“Bless you Jamie. Bless you.” Tears were in Granny Smith’s eyes.
“Granny,” Jamie said, “I do love Jesus, and I love you too. Can we look at the Cards again?”
Smiling, Granny said, “Yes, but not tonight. Those Cards will always be special and remind us of the coming of Jesus into the world. They will remind you too that you have given Him a present – yourself!”
