Topic: Camping (07/11/05)
I remember well my first visit to the vast state of Texas. I was traveling from my home which was nestled in a cozy area of tall pines that dominated the steamy southern sky. The trip west had gradually yielded fewer and fewer trees, and shorter and shorter ones, until at last we reached our destination. Near Austin I found myself awed while standing on a gently rolling hill. I was scanning the immense Texas sky as it stretched all the way from the sun’s farthest eastern horizon point to its farthest western one. I had never seen so much sky at one time in my whole life. My ‘drop jaw’ reaction was comical to my Texas family as I continued gaping at the sight. Nevertheless, a part of me at that moment identified with all those before me and since who have ‘hankered’ to leave the claustrophobic cities and woods in order to be one with the wide Western sky. That experience inspired this poem.



The Mustang Sun

Take the crowded cities,
and give me the land of the big sky
where the mustang sun gallops
free and wild,
high and wide,
in the great western blue.

Give me the land of the big sky
where the mustang sun stomps into billows
the white sky mist
and thunders the heavens with wind swift hooves.

Give me the land of the big sky,
and let me follow the golden mustang sun
all the way to evening
as his flames finally rest
in the crackling of a campfire,
then flicker,
to rise red again at dawn.

The poetry was beautiful and vividly described. I always thought Montana was the land of the Big Sky, but I think that they must have included Texas too. God bless ya, littlelight
