Every trip to the mailbox, for the last six years, has resulted in disappointment. Each birthday and holiday that passed, I’d think, “maybe this time.” I should’ve quit hoping, but I couldn’t. The passing of time had left me with confusion and frustration. I’ve prayed for him. Maybe one day…
I had to stop pacing. To keep busy, I took some towels out of the dryer and folded them. After checking my watch, I went to see if the mail had come. No, the flag was still up.
“Come on, this is Christmas Eve, and the last day for mail!” I said to no one.
I looked down the street and saw the postman coming. I couldn’t get my sweater on quick enough. As I rushed toward the door, I slipped into my clogs.
I beat the mailman to the curb. I could see the large bundle of mail in his hand as he pulled up.
“Good morning, Karen.”
“Morning, Gary. It sure is a busy time of year.”
“Christmas always is. Here you go.” He handed me the bundle of mail.
“Thank you and Merry Christmas.”
“You have a great day, Karen.”
Inside, I got a fresh cup of coffee and went to the sun room. I had been waiting all morning for this, and now, I’m afraid of being disappointed again.
“Lord, please help me to accept your will. I know there may not be a Christmas card from him. Help me to find some peace. Whatever the outcome may be, I will praise you. In your name I pray. Amen.”
I methodically sorted through each envelope, checking to see who it was from.
“Well, there’s one from Aunt Mary. Oh, here’s one from Tracy. I haven’t heard from her since last Christmas.”
When I finished looking through the stack of cards, tears streamed down my face. Nothing from him.
“Well, Lord, I know you have a plan and I will continue to trust you. Maybe I will hear from my father on my birthday.”

Sometimes in life, people let us down. Even the ones that are suppose to always be there for you. A father is a very special part of a daughter’s life. If you have a father in your life, be thankful. There are lots of us out there that don’t. But, there is one Father that will never leave us. God is always there. He will take care of us. When we fall down, He picks us up. When we hurt, He comforts us. He will never let us down.
