“It’s s-n-o-w-i-n-g! It’s s-n-o-w-i-n-g!” Julie sang as she skipped to find her mother.
“Mommy, it’s snowing, can I go outside and make a snowman?”
“Not right now. Let’s get some food into that empty tummy of yours and get you dressed. Then you can go out and make the best snowman!”
Julie ran up the stairs and headed for the dresser. The quicker she got dressed and ate; the sooner there would be time to make a snowman. Giggle. Giggle. She had put her right leg in the left pant leg. Pulling her Christmas green shirt over her head and replacing her slippers for socks, Julie headed for the window. She drew a small circle, then a bigger one, and added eyes, a nose and a happy mouth. Then wiped away the fog and dried her hand on her shirt. It was still snowing! The neighbor lady had a shovel in her hand.
Jackie looked out the kitchen window. She reflected on her aunt, who often remarked of not liking snow, nor living where it’s cold for months. Jackie didn’t like to drive in snow, but loved to watch it gently fall from the sky and blanket the earth. I’ve made a few snowmen in my time. It’s was a good day to be home.
“Mommy, I saw Mrs. Jones all bundled up with a shovel in her hand,” said Julie, while picking up the last piece of gingerbread pancake with her fork.
Jackie got up and looked out the front door. Mr. Jones had died recently and had always shoveled the sidewalk. Now Jackie seemed to be in a hurry.
“Let’s get our coats on and see if Mrs. Jones could use some helpers.”
“Then can I make my snowman?” asked Julie.
“Yes, then you can make your snowman,” she smiled.
Jackie helped with most of the shoveling. Julie showed Mrs. Jones how to make an angel, by lying on the snow, and moving her arms and legs. All with rosy cheeks, Mrs. Jones invited them in for hot chocolate, for Julie, and tea for the grown-ups. Mrs. Jones shared how much she missed her husband and how grateful she was for their help.
After their visit, Julie and her mommy spent time making a snowman. They added a carrot for the nose, black buttons for the eyes and mouth, and a Christmas colored scarf to keep Frosty warm. Then they went inside to get warm.
“I think there is more flour on you then in the cookie dough,” Jackie said, brushing her finger across Julie’s nose. They were making chocolate chip cookies, her favorite!
Looking at the Christmas cards on the wall, Julie had a great idea. She was busy and quiet for the longest time. She made a Christmas card, which of course included a picture of a snowman, for their special friend. Later with cookies wrapped in a festive red and green container and the Christmas card in hand, Julie and Mommy walked over to Mrs. Jones’ house.
