I told lets go for a drive. We could go around the city and see some of the beauitiful nativity scenea and take a look at some of the nice Christmas lights and maybe she would get into the mood about Christmas. She looked at me and shook her head, "No, I am waiting for some mail."
I was curious, "who?" I knew if it was news, she would get a call, and not some mail.
"Well, Nathan is missing and I am waiting for him to call or something. His wife says he is going to write. I told her anything but a card. I hate crds, they don't have any meaning to them. And people have taken the joy out of the holidays."
I said a silent prayer for Nathan. He is her only child, and I knew as cynical as she was, if he sent her anything inthe mail, she would be pleased. "Lets go anyway, and it will take your mind off of the mail man, and we can take the phone with us."
She paused for a moment then she decided to go with me. We rode around the neighborhood for a moment. Her phone went off. It was her daughter-in-law. She insisted her had to come home immediately.
When we arrived at her house, her daughter-in-law was waiting. She stood on the porch, and handed hwer a pink card. My friend, Evelyn, looked at the card and shrugged.
"Open it," the daughter-in-law smiled. "Please, it is from Nathan."
Evelyn ripped the card open, "Mom, I love you. My car broke doen, and I wanted you to know that I am your present for Christmas. Open the door."
When Evelyn opened the door, she saw her twenty-five year old son, stand with his arms opened waiting for her. As she held him tight, she realized something. This was the best card she ever had!
