The temperature in my car rose at least five degrees, I was so hot. Not to mention the blue haze that permeated the air in the car. As my friend Dur used to say, “Lord please, don’t give me a gun.” Seriously, what is it about being surrounded by a ton and a half of steel, plastic, and glass that sanctions the impression we are invisible or bulletproof? Why is it that we can become enraged by the actions of a complete stranger on the highway and still smile benevolently at the greeters on our way into Church?
After my harrowing and death-defying commute, I settled into my ergonomic chair and opened my email client and these words in the first message stopped my dead in my tracks… "As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:12-17
Thank you, Lord for piercing my heart with the reminder of who I am in You. I resolve to be a more compassionate and forgiving driver. The next time I’m cut off in traffic, forced to lock ‘em up, or get behind a mossy rock on wheels I’ll wish them Godspeed and wave with my whole hand.
A little further along the Way…
