Camping
From the time I was a little girl growing up in Marin County, California, we went on our yearly camping trip. The trip consisted of mom, dad and my brother. We would spend weeks packing, just to arrive and realize that we had forgotten our favorite this or that. All of our trips seemed to be very long. The car would overheat going up the hills and the brakes would go out going down. It wasn’t long before I knew when my dad starting sniffling we were in trouble. He sniffled a lot during those trips.
When we would arrive at our destination, which was hours and hours away from home, my mother would start to holler and Dad would calmly set up camp. It seems that my parents always had a trailer to sleep in, where my brother and I had only a tent. My brother knew I hated spiders and the like, so he would spend his days looking for the ugliest of them all and stack our tent with the little critters, just to hear me scream.
One of the most memorable trips we had was when we went fishing and my brother started to cast his reel and the hook got stuck in my rump and then he proceeded to keep pulling on the line. I could have killed him. This kind of thing went on over and over.
Other times it was unusually my mom who got hurt. One year she was making spaghetti and the boiling water splashed on her face and we had to rush her to emergency. Another time she got so sunburn we had to through her in the back of our truck and rush to the ER. Very traumatic experiences, no wonder I don’t like camping.
