The night was filled with complete chaos. There was an hour-long wait at the front door. New cooks. Slow ticket times. Non-tippers. Guest complaints. She was so frustrated. She went into a restroom stall and prayed for God to help her get through the night. “Please Lord, I don't want to lose my cool!” She took all of it personal. She gave excellent customer service, but she had no control over the circumstances.
“Hey miss, can you get me a Rum and Coke with a slice of lime?” The restaurant was packed and the music was very loud. Roxie didn't hear what her guest had said. She leaned in and asked him to repeat himself. He rolled his eyes and told her to just forget it. “Oh-h-h-h-kay.” She replied. So she went on to tend to her other customers. He went to the bar and got his own drink and brought it back to the table. “I could have got that for you, sir!” She couldn't help but remind him. “Well, your too busy taking care of your other customers!” he said. “It is my job to serve you and if you need anything else, let me know.” she responded. As Roxie began to walk away, a woman at the same table grabbed her apron and said, “Look at this steak! It is still bloody and I told you that I wanted it to be well done! This is starting to really make me mad!”
Roxie had asked her church to pray for her bad temper last Sunday. She knew this had to be her test. Even though she whole heartedly wanted to do God's will, she was about to snap! She felt her blood pressure rising, her jaw tightening and her old ways starting to resurface. She and this lady was about to go round in round. Roxie stared this woman strait into her eyes as she gently took the steak back from her. She could feel tears swelling up as she waited for the steak to up-cook. These were not tears of fear; in her mind, she could easily take that lady out; but rather they were the tears of disappointing God with her bad temper. She took the steak back to the lady and walked away as fast as she could.
“Roxie, you really made one of my guests mad!” the manager told her. “I'm going to have to write you up.” “Fine! Whatever!”, she thought, as she rolled her eyes. “This guy named, Red Satane said that you answered the phone with a prayer! What were you thinking?” She grimaced as she signed her write up form. “Wow! That was such an evil-sounding name.”
“Here's your check. I'll take this when ever you are ready.” Roxie told her irate guests. “Hey, come here!” He said in a surprisingly softer voice. “We ain't been very nice to you. Sorry!”, as he rose and staggered toward her. “Let me give you a hug!” Roxie hugged him back and praised God in her mind. Even though he reeked of alcohol, she felt much calmer. “Would God have hugged me through a drunk man?”, she wondered.
Throughout the rest of the night, Roxie found quarter's, dimes, nickels and pennies all over the restaurant. “This has to be God's way of tipping me.”, she thought.
On the following Sunday, Roxie couldn't wait to give the people at her Church her testimony. “Just so Satan don't think that I felt defeated, I want to give God praise for giving me a temper test. Even though I failed the test miserably, God still made his presence known. He was still with me, regardless! I don't care much for my job, but I can't think of a better place for a Christian to be!” All the congregation said, “Amen!”
