Julie was smart, cute, and outgoing and she wanted every girl to know this. If you were in Julie’s click, you were the elite in SV junior class. Julie was the first to put her hand up at every question and would stare you down if you dared to challenge her. Come to think of it, I don’t think it was only Sheryl’s intelligence that turned Julie off; it was her mysterious aura that bothered Julie’s ego.
I finally sparked a conversation with Sheryl when we were partnered up for the school science project. I invited her home to dinner on our first assignment and realized her quiet nature in school was only due to her reservation. We started to hang out a lot and became fast friends.
One day, I invited her to spend the night at my house. That night the mysterious and quiet Sheryl opened up her heart to me on why she shut people out. She told me that after the tragic death of her father, her mother fell into a deep depression. To soothe her pain, Sheryl started taking sleeping pills and injecting herself with heroine. Soon she found herself in the hospital for drug overdose. Her mother sent her to rehab and later shipped her off to her grandparents here in San Francisco.
When Julie saw my new found friendship with her rival, she started to befriend me in a patronizing way. I am not a popular girl in school and Julie and I never ran in the same circle, but my new friendship with the elite SV High girl put a spice into my boring life.
Julie asked me one day after Algebra class to come over to her house and I was on cloud nine. Her sweet serenity and deep concern about my friend’s silent nature made me blurt out enough information about Sheryl to satisfy her rival. Julie invited Sheryl and me over to a sleep over the next Saturday to get to know her friends better.
Sheryl was hesitant in going, but I pleaded and persisted that she go and my perseverance paid off.
So many girls came over that night and were constantly admiring Julie’s family mansion. Sheryl’s quiet nature started to make the other girls uncomfortable. I became sorry that I ever asked her to come with me.
Finally Julie gathered all the girls in a circle and she decided that we were all going to play truth or dare. My heart sank at the moment when Julie called out Sheryl’s name.
‘Sheryl, truth or dare?’
‘Truth’
(Oh god, why did she decide on truth)
‘Okay, the moment of truth. Sheryl……is it true that you went to rehab cause you were a druggie?’ Laughing with a sense of triumph.
My heart was throbbing a mile a minute. Sheryl looked at me with hurt eyes and I knew I had betrayed her trust. Everyone’s eyes were on her, waiting to see what she would do next. She quietly got up and walked out of the room. I dropped my head low at the quietness in the room and I could feel everyone’s eyes on me. My heart fell as I heard the front door slam shut.
Julie quickly broke the silence with her giggle.
‘Okay guys who cares! Let’s move on with the game…Laura, truth or dare?’
I stayed awake that night wishing to turn back time.
A week later, I finally mustered up the courage to call Sheryl. As I reached the phone to dial Sheryl’s number, my heart started racing. ‘Oh God, help me to know what to say.’
‘Hello,’ I could hear Sheryl’s voice.
‘Hi Sheryl it’s me.’
‘What do you want?’
‘Sheryl, I…I….just wanted to say that I am really sorry.’
(There was complete quietness on the phone).
‘Sheryl, please forgive me. I value our friendship and I have no excuse for what I did.’
(Still quietness)
‘Please give me another chance Sheryl.’
(Still quietness)
‘I don’t deserve your friendship Sheryl, but can we at least talk?’
‘Okay then….tomorrow,’ she responded and quickly disconnected.
‘Thank you Lord for opening the door and giving me another chance!’
