Wandering through an old junk store one day I saw it. I made my way over to the shelf where it lay among other items people had chosen to throw away. I touched it ever so carefully and as I did my mind wandered back over twenty years. I saw my mother propped up on the bar stool in our living room, receiver in hand having her daily talk with my grandmother. I knew when she talked to my grandmother because usually she never talked, just listened. I remembered my very first call from a boy when I was in my preteen years and how I would hug close to the wall, receiver in hand so no one could hear me. I remember my father answering it in the wee hours of the morning and receiving the devastating news that my cousins had been killed together in an automobile accident when I was a teenager. I can recall impatiently waiting for it to ring as I got into my teens longing for my call from “Mr. Right.”

“What is that thing, mom?” I am startled back into reality as a young girl asks her mother what the large, green contraption with a rotary dial and numbers and a cord could possibly be. Her mom laughs and tells her it is an old fashioned telephone. I smile, still lost in thought. Old fashioned phone, huh? How could something I used and can still remember using be old fashioned? I feel the slight ache in my bones; see the gray in my hair, and the wrinkles forming by the day on my face. Yea, old fashioned is right I guess. But how I remember those days on that old green rotary phone; an item now sought after by antique lovers everywhere. Who would have thought I would have gone from talking in one place on the old green phone to being able to carry my cell phone in my pocket and talk anytime, anywhere.

As I thought about this I began to think about my relationship with my Lord. I remember when I would snuggle under my covers and read my devotional story and my Bible and pray until I feel asleep every night when I was a little girl. That was before I really understood that you could pray anywhere, anytime. I felt really close to Him there, like He was waiting for me every night. As I grew older and learned more I realized I could do this anywhere and pray anytime. I moved from that house, to a dorm room, then to an apartment and then later to my house. I still longed for the time when I would to sit in that one special place and talk with my Lord. Yes I could do this anywhere anytime, like I could with my cell phone, but how sweet to just sit and not move about and really communicate with my Lord.

I knew then I needed to learn the lesson from the antiquated telephone, yes the idea of sitting in one spot to talk on the phone may be old fashioned, but finding a place to sit and communicate with my Lord and Savior is not. I moved about the store looking for more “old fashioned” items to stir my memories. After a while I decided on the phone and purchased it. It forever remains my reminder to take time and sit in one place and talk to my Lord.
