It seemed like only yesterday I was running through the farm house yard or climbing a tree to hide from one of my cousins.
One of the greatest games was "hide and seek". We had no limits and there were dozens of places to hide.
Another game we loved to play was king of the mountain by sliding down a large hay stack. The new hay bailer really ruined some fun times, until we learned to build forts in the hay loft with them.
Summer had many enjoyable memories for our home. School was out and the farm was the center of family gatherings. Kids were allowed to play at will, because there were no outside dangers.
Oh we may step on a rock (because everyone went barefooted). There may be an encounter a bee and the resulting sting, but considering the length of time we were left alone to play, nothing but pure fun usually happened.
There was not any fear; we were at home so we just knew we were safe. Dad would ring this huge dinner bell that hung just outside our well house and that meant time for the noon meal. It was so good you could smell it long before you reached the house.
There was fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans from our garden and home made bread rolls hot from the oven. Mom usually had real butter and some honey from the hive dad had robbed.
She usually baked a chocolate cake even though my aunts would bring a desert too. One of my aunts always made strawberry shortcake, and that was my favorite.
In July we would go down below the barn and there was a huge flat rock, as big as a house, and that was where the spring was also. We would take fireworks, watermelon, and make homemade ice-cream. Of course all of our mom's would bring sandwiches and stuff but those were the most important things for the 4th of July.
It's funny how I can only remember the good times about home. I know sometimes things seemed hard for Mom and Dad because they would say strange things like " you know money don't grow on trees." I was small but even cousins younger than I was knew that.
I mean, you see things like apples, and peaches, even plumbs growing on a tree.
Grown up's are always trying to confuse you.
I watched my grandpa killing chickens for dinner once and even after there head was chopped off they flipped and flopped all over the place. Once my mom told me I acted like a chicken with his head cut off, and that was really strange. I never did lie down and flop all around every where like that old chicken did for grandpa.
Thinking on all of the things home meant to me, makes me ask myself what possible fun can the kids have after I am grown.
Things have changed so much. Everyday more people move into town and farmers get new things that take more time.
I know it takes more time because dad can't go to the fishing pond with me any more, he told me there isn't enough time.
We used to do things together and he would talk to me while I helped. Now he just tells me to stay out of the way, so I won't get hurt or break something.
I sure hope home won't change so much that my kids can't come and enjoy all of the things we do for fun.
Maybe what ever they play or get to do it will still be home to them.
