On early mornings, while it was still fairly dark, I would often make my way to the kitchen without turning on any lights. The Shadow would wait at the top of the stairs, just on the other side of the basement door, for some unsuspecting, half-awake person to walk down the hallway. Then, at just the right moment, a fast-moving, thin black shadow would come darting out from under the door as if grabbing at my toes. Sometimes two thin black shadows would appear from under the door and make slow sweeping motions as if saying, ‘I’m over here. Come play with me.’
One night I heard a bang, then another bang. I didn’t know what it was, so I went to investigate. I discovered that the Shadow was summoning me through a makeshift doorbell. The moulding on the inside of the door frame of the door leading to the basement was chewed and had come loose from the pets of the previous owners of our house. The bottom nail was missing and the moulding could easily be lifted. The Shadow discovered that lifting the moulding, pulling it back and letting it go produced a noise loud enough to wake the dead or at least the sleeping. The Shadow would do this at the most inconvenient times of the day and night. I finally put a nail through the end of the loose moulding to hold it tight against the doorframe and, therefore, prevented the Shadow from annoying me with this doorbell.
Even though the Shadow is scary and annoying at times, she is a very loveable black cat.
