“Andy, Andy!”
“Aunt Bee, what in the world’s the matter!”
“Anna Jane is having the baby. She’s at Mt. Pilot Memorial. Opie! Where’s Opie?
“Opie’s not here. He stayed after school for practice!”
“We’ll be late, Andy. You have to go get him!”
“Get the suitcase ready, we’ll be back directly. Stop frettin’ so, your gonna make yourself sick. We should have plenty of time; after all it is her first youngin'. Her husband is there.”
“Perhaps. Oh dear! Oh dear!” she said fanning.
As Andy drove by the jail, Barney ran out. “Where you goin’ Ang? I just got done feedin’ Otis, when I saw you drivin’ by.”
“Anna’s in labor; Aunt Bee’s in a tizzy; and I have to get to the school and fetch Opie. I tell you Barn, that boy is really fired up about bein’ an uncle.”
“Now don’t’ you worry about a thing Ang. Otis can watch the jail, and I’ll help you drive.”
“You know we can’t let Otis watch the jail.”
“Gomer, is still sworn in, isn’t he? How about him?”
“Oh, alright, get Gomer, but hurry. I’ll meet you back at the house.”
“Got it! Don’t you worry about a thing, you just stay cool, calm and collected.” Barney said running toward the fillin’ station.
Andy thought. “What a ride to Mt. Pilot this is bound to be. Aunt Bee’s all worked up, Barney, why he is always worked up, and Opie, well I’d just better get to that school.”
“Hey pa, what ya doin’ here? Is everything alright?”
“Yes son, everything is just dandy. Come on, I’ve got some excitin’ news for you.”
“What is it pa?” Opie asked, grabbing his books.
“Anna is having her baby. She’s at the hospital right now, and we’ve got to get a move on.”
“I’m gonna be an uncle today pa?”
“It appears that way. Let’s go, Aunt Bee is most likely pacin’ back and forth, and Barney should be there by now.”
“Do you think we’ll make it in time pa? I’d sure like to be there. It’s important that your uncle is one of the first of your kin you see, don’t ya think?”
“You know it I do.”
On the way to Mt. Pilot, Opie asked, “Pa, I’ve never been an uncle before. Do you reckon I’ll be as good a one as you? I remember that time we took cousin Jacob fishin’. Remember all the fish we caught? He’s always talkin’ about that. What else can you tell me about bein’ an uncle?”
“I’ll answer that one Ang.” Barney offered confidently. “You see Op, an uncle is the closest thing to being the man of the house as you can get. An uncle is either the brother of your ma, or the brother of your pa. You, Op, are the mother’s brother in this instance. Now if your ma or your pa hasn’t got a brother, well then…..”
“I think Opie get’s the point, Barn.” Andy interrupted.
“I’m just tryin’ to teach the boy a few things about being an uncle, that’s all.”
“Son, your gonna make a fine uncle, a fine one.” Andy assured his son.
“Why do ya think, pa?”
“You see son, an uncle is full of love, plumb full of love. He’s a good example too. An uncle can tell you stories about your kinfolk like no one else.”
“You mean like the story Uncle Jack told me bout how you were in the chicken coop pert near the whole day ‘cause you wer scared of the chickens?”
“Chicken of the chickens, uh Ang?.” Laughed Barney.
“Yeah Barn! Now Opie, uncles tell things like the history and traditions of your kin too.” Andy continued.
“Uncles are real important, someone to look up to, huh pa?”
“Yes sir re, and what is the number one thing that would cause a youngin’ to look up to you?”
“Lovin’ and servin’ God by prayin’ and goin’ to church, right?”
“That’s exactly right! Looky there, it’s the hospital. That little one is waitin’ to get that first look at Uncle Opie.”
“Uncle Opie! I like the sound of that!”
