Topic: Uncles/Aunts (04/17/08)
My Aunt Jayne is one of my favorite people. As a child, I remember being on vacation with her at a local water park in a plastic inner tube. We were surrounded by and bouncing on man-made waves, while the sounds of tunes by the Beach Boys and happy screams from nearby children rang in our ears. She was always full lighthearted fun with a ready smile. I remember my cousin Mat once saying, “Having Aunt Jayne around is like having no grown-ups around.” He was right. She was just a big kid.

Unfortunately, I'm not a kid anymore. And I have developed this annoying little habit of reading more into something than what is actually said. Recently, my Aunt Jayne said something that really bugged me for a while. She was talking to me about a movie we had just seen the night before and she said something to the effect of, “everyone wants to be married.”

At the time, I just nodded. Inwardly thinking, “I don't! Is she trying to tell me what to do? God has placed me in this body (for a particular reason) where marriage isn't really a possibility! Thank you very much but I don't need your opinions about what I should want to do with the life He has designed for me! I need His Truth (Christ)! God, please help me be able to control my tongue.”

I know God didn't intend everyone to have same kind of life. The apostle Paul addresses this topic in his letters more than once. My favorite example is in Romans 9:21. He writes, “Does not the potter [in this case God] have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?” To me, this verse screams that God has already defined the course of my life. My job is to obey and live the Truth (no matter the cost) and let whatever is going to happen just happen (to simply stand – see 2 Corinthians 1:21-22).

Anyway, I'm sure I have made more out of that comment about everyone wanting to be married than my Aunt Jayne ever intended. It should go without saying that Christians should be very careful about what comes out of their mouths. In Ephesians 4:29, Paul writes, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” My Aunt Jayne is still one of my favorite people, regardless of that comment. I know that she is more concerned in the Truth (Christ) than anything else.

Your aunt would probably be very dismayed that she accidentally hurt you so. She sounds like a wonderful, loving person. Thanks for sharing your story about her.

The lessons you teach in this article are powerful. The "vessels" we dwell in on earth are exactly what the Potter intend for his purpose. Thank you for sharing.
