My father taught us many good lessons growing up. The most important one was to tithe. There were times when my parents did not know if they were going to meet their bills. The one thing they did know was that they were going to tithe before anything else was taken out. My mother would put that away first and we lived on the rest. God did not let us down. We always had food and clothes and was taken care of in many ways.
My father has always been very respectful of my mother. He still to this day opens the door for her, warms her car and even buys her little gifts when he goes out. They have been married for 59 years and still going. They still act like little teenagers madly in love with each other. If I were going to marry a man, I would want him to be just like my father.
Daddy has always been very devoted to his family and his church. My father was a deacon in our church and served on many committees during the times that he was able to do so. He drove the bus for senior outings in the church. My father is known as a very deeply devout Christian man and many people respect him for this. He is a quiet man but lives the life of a giant. He is not able to do a lot now, and this hurts me. He was always the one to fix and take care of everything around the house and took very good care of the cars. My daddy is a Jack-of-All-Trades. I learned much from being with him.
Seven years ago, I nearly lost my father. He became very ill and was given only a less than 2% chance of survival with surgery. I thought that my life would be lost if I lost my father. He opted to have the surgery and the doctors told us that he would never go home. They said that he might live a few days and then die. He spent 4 months in the hospital and is still living today.
One morning during the time he was there, the aides were going to give him a bath. The nurse told me where the chapel was. I could not understand why she would tell me this out of the clear blue sky. I found my way there and when I got there I could not go in. My life over the years had strayed so far from the will of God that I was ashamed to go into that little chapel. I placed daddy’s name on a prayer request list that was at the door. I stood there and finally got the courage to go in. The stained glassed windows were beautiful and there was one that the sun was shining through so beautifully. It was a picture of Jesus holding out his hands to receive the children. I knew then why this nurse directed me to the chapel. She was an angel sent from God. I prayed and asked God to forgive me for the mistakes of my life. I told God that if he would spare my father’s life, I would serve him the rest of my life.
My father went home. He told the doctors that God was not finished with him. He has spent hours speaking in churches about his experience and telling them how God spared his life, because he was not finished with him. I am spending my time going on foreign and home mission trips and have become very involved in my church. I live each day trying to do the will of God. I know that the direction of my life could only be true because of the angel that pointed me to that little chapel that day and the fact that I am my father’s daughter.

In a week where the topic lends itself to many "tribute" types of pieces, you really want to make yours stand out. Consider choosing just one incident that really reveals your dad's character, and writing about just that one incident.
Well done on your entry.
