As you know writing is what I do best. My mind is a Pandora’s box of thoughts about you this heartrending mid-morning. I feel compelled to write you a letter. Putting my thoughts on paper always helps. Grandma used to say, “pick up a dish” whenever I had any troubles. Instead I pick up a pen.
I remember when I was just four-years old I would wait eagerly to hear the sound of your car pulling up into the driveway indicating you were home from work. At that point I would rush out the door running outside so I would be the first person you saw when you got home. I did this because you were not just my Dad you were my hero.
You always let me know as I grew up I could be anything I wanted to be. It was always important to you that I knew I was loved. I especially remember all the stories you used to share of your childhood. The songs you would sing and the poems you used to tell me at bedtime. You taught me how to live, love and laugh.
Melodious memories of us during these past thirty-seven years have been a still small voice that has aided in leading me through life. I am creative because of you. It is because of your influence I’m the kind of parent I am today. I have become the woman I am because of your abiding love, guidance and endless support. There is so much I have to thank you for.
I will never forget that phone call just a few months ago when you let me know an aneurysm threatened to take your life. I got off the phone feeling dazed by your plight. My Dad, my hero could possibly die? For the first time I was forced to think about how I would be able live without you. The mere thought of it is beyond devastating. You just have to survive this otherwise I don’t know how I will go on living.
The several weeks that followed were hard on all of us who love you. The hostile aneurysm was a time bomb in your main heart artery that could burst at any given moment. If that happened you would be instantaneously taken from us.
Thankfully you have made it through to today. As I write this letter you are in the operating room where you have been now for a few hours. It seems like those hours have dragged on forever. Though I have tried my best to trust God you will be okay, I know with all too intense veracity you may not survive.
Deep down inside though I believe you will. Resonating through my heart is the feeling that God still has so many plans for your life. But what if I am wrong? What if you don’t make it through this open-heart surgery? What if the aneurysm bursts while they operate? I absolutely abhor such a thought.
Dad the phone is ringing it might be Mom calling from the hospital. I am almost afraid to answer it.
It was Mom and she told me the great news! Mercifully, you have been given the gift of a second chance at life! We are all so blessed to have you still with us. This is a gift from God I will forever cherish. I pray and trust Him that your recovery will be as smooth as the surgery. You have two Granddaughters’ who love and need you. Now you can see them grow up. I cannot believe how close we came to no longer having you with us.
We all love you and I can’t wait to see you. To be there for you as you have been for me all these years. I want you to know that you will always be my hero. A man who has shown me a glimpse of the eternal love God has for me. For many years to come I will always look at this day as a truly miraculous milestone in the life the most courageous man I know, my Dad, my hero.
Love Leigh
