Rick came home with fear and hesitation. He wondered how his mother would react to the prayer meeting he attended. He didn’t want to lie to his mom, but at the same time, he didn’t have the guts to tell her the truth. He silently prayed that God would give him strength to tell her. His mother didn’t like him attending a non-Catholic prayer meeting. She gave him a curious look as he entered the door.

“Why so late, Rick?” she asked.

“Mom, I went to Helen’s house,” he answered.

“For prayer?” she replied with anger.

Rick put down his head. He didn’t look into her eyes, for he knew she was angry. He quietly slipped into his room.

At dinner, he ate silently; joined by his elder brother, elder sister and parents. Only he and his brother came to accept the Lord and were attending a different church of which their mother did not approve. Every time Rick and his brother tried to explain their faith to their mom, it would end up in heated arguments. This made Rick’s brother decide not to argue.

After dinner Rick’s mom wanted the boys to have a word with her. She asked “So, what have you boys decided? To still continue with this prayer groups and church that you both are attending?”

Rick became angry, “What’s wrong with it, Mom? After all we are learning a lot from God’s Word? And by the way, what did you ever teach us from the Bible since our childhood?”

His brother interrupted, “What are you saying, Rick? This is not the way to answer Mom.” He was furious with Rick for being so harsh. His mother was shocked hearing Rick’s words. She quietly slipped away from the living room with tears brimming in her eyes.

Months later Rick’s mom agreed for her boys to go the way they chose. But the larger part of the family still disapproved of the decision the boys and few of their cousins made. During this time, Rick’s mother tragically passed away, and everybody from the larger part of the family blamed the boys for it. They presumed that their mother died because of the sorrow she carried due to her sons’ disobedience to their family’s faith.


But Rick and her brother knew that, though their mom did not accept the Lord as her personal Savior, she was convinced of the way the boys took. What pained Rick the most was the way he answered his mom after the dinner conversation that night. Yet he was sure his mother would forgive him for that.

So sad to have unfinished business before a loved one dies.
A little more character description would have helped the reader relate to the story.

powerful story - it's hard living in a household with a family member who is not saved and challenging you at every turn. Good writing. Thanks for sharing. God bless :)
