"The county clerk," I said.
"That is upstairs and to the right," said the gentleman.
I hurried to get on the elevator before the door closed, and pushed the button for the second floor. When the elevator door opened, I rushed to the county clerk’s window. Thank goodness there are only two people in front of me, I thought. I fidgeted until it was my turn at the window.
“May I help you?” the country clerk asked.
"I am here to vote," I said.
"I’ll need your voter’s card.” She walked away and went through some papers at a desk. I assumed she was trying to find my precinct. After a few minutes she pulled out a paper and card, asking, "Do you want a republican or democratic ballot?"
"Republican," I said.
She walked back and handed me a pen. “I need you to sign here, then take the card and stick it into the machine.”
I walked over to the voting booth. This would be the first time I would vote on a computer screen. I slipped the card into the card reader and the ballot came up. The first screen showed the presidential candidates. I touched the screen and made my choice.
The next screen showed those running for the US senate. Oh no, I thought. I did not know who these people were. I was so fixated on voting for president that I did not research the candidates for US Senate. This was embarrassing, because I’ve watched the news and I’m politically savvy.
I could have shot myself for not finding out who the candidates were on the ballot. I noticed there were voter guides available, but I was afraid to leave the computer screen to get one. There was nothing much I could do - I was just going to have to pick someone. I chose a name that sounded good, but a feeling of frustration came over me. This is not the way I want to pick my next senator, I thought to myself.
I promised myself that the next time I voted, I’d know who was on the ballot. I was never going to make this mistake again.
