Topic: Illustrate the meaning of "A Man is Known by the Company He Keeps" (without using the actual phrase). (01/31/08)
I was considered weird by my college mates, because my way of thinking was not in line with theirs. Be it during my undergraduate period or while doing my Masters, I was a girl with few friends.

Somehow I didn’t fit into my classmates’ discussions, interests and choices they made in life. Their types of movies, songs, clothes, girl’s secrets, fun and jokes made were a category that I didn’t fit in.


I was more interested in talking about Jesus, Bible, prayer and Christian living. I only had a few friends who shared similar thoughts and made similar choices.


For others I was a peculiar girl.


Not that I was very spiritual, but I always tried to see things from God’s perspective.


Sometimes my classmates made fun of me, saying that I am a thinker or scholar and things like that. Not only had my classmates thought of me so, but also some of my relatives and cousins. Yet their comments didn’t bother me much because they were not believers.


Even in a fellowship of believers as a youth, I had a lot of disappointments. Not everyone wanted to change their lifestyles according to God. There were youngsters who evangelized well, involved themselves in prayer meetings and Bible studies but little was the difference made in their attitude, characters and behaviors. Even among them I did not fit into their groups. I was an odd man (rather odd woman) out all the time.


I was disheartened to see youngsters in Christ behave very cheaply sometimes in the name of trend and culture. But I was glad that I did find one or two good believers in Christ who were friends for life. We used to talk about many subjects pertaining to life but only those that were beneficial for our Christian walk. We had one thing in common: we were honest with ourselves and the life we led. Our aim was only one thing – to live a life pleasing the Lord without any spiritual facade.


In my life’s journey, I am blessed to have met some more friends across continents, who share similar thoughts and heart. And I know they are not weird…

I can relate to this article on a personal level. I have always been considered "weird" myself for taking the less traveled road and doing my best to serve God. Good for you that you stand up for your faith! I personally don't think you are weird at all. :)
