No matter how much, as children, we wish the years would fly by and we would be all grown up, life is a process. The word process can be defined as: a continuous action, operation, or series of changes taking place in a definite manner.
In this physical world, we are born as little babies, completely dependant on an adult to feed us, love us, watch over us and nurture us. Without this care from an adult, we would not survive. Through the process of time, we learn and grow. We become more independent.
It would be silly to expect a baby to walk at four months old. A baby goes through the process of growing and learning to sit up, crawl, and then eventually they become strong enough to walk. They mature and eventually become able to take care of themselves without the help of another adult. This is the process that takes place in every life; a series of changes that takes place in a definite manner.
Spiritual growth is a process as well. Jesus told Nicodemus that a man must be born again. He told him that that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (See John 3:1-8)
“He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but because of His own pity and mercy, by the cleansing bath of the new birth (regeneration) and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” (Titus 3:5 Amp.) We are born again spiritually when we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead. (See Romans 10:9-10) This is the beginning of a new spiritual life in Christ. We are a brand new creature. (See 2 Corn. 5:17)
When we are born again, we are complete in Him. (See Colossians 2:10) We will never be more born again than we when we first confess Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Spiritually, we are complete. It is our minds that must be transformed and renewed. (See Romans 12:2) However, it doesn’t happen overnight. 2 Peter 2:2 says “As new born babies, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby…” The Amplified Bible puts it this way, “Like new born babies you should crave (thirst for, earnestly desire) the pure (unadulterated) spiritual milk, that by it you may be nurtured and grow unto [completed] salvation...” This is a process.
I’ve heard it said that Jesus prepared thirty years for a three year ministry. Today, many people want to prepare three years for a thirty year ministry. In today’s microwave society, people want everything quick and easy. We don’t want to have to wait long for anything. However, spiritual growth doesn’t happen that way anymore than a baby walks before it first learns to sit up and then to crawl.
As we feed on the Word of God, we renew our minds and learn to think like God thinks and act like God acts. We are transformed from glory to glory as we behold His image in His Word. (See 2 Corn. 3:18) We begin to be developed in our character. We begin to take on the characteristics of our Heavenly Father. We begin our journey as spiritual babies and grow into mature sons and daughters of God.
Life can be so fast paced and stressful now days. What a relief to learn to slow down and enjoy our daily walk with God and the process of growing on a daily basis. We will walk as mature sons and daughters of God if we continue in His Word and stay in daily fellowship with our Heavenly Father. I think it would benefit us all to learn to enjoy the process.
