“I need to practice being responsible again,” I replied, “so I decided to help at a nearby soup kitchen once a week.” I added the benefits of volunteering, such as a free meal for myself, and a reference on my resume when I did need to look for work again.
My attitude toward volunteer work helped me greatly in my recovery from the bipolar form of schizoaffective disorder. It was through volunteering that I demonstrated dependability and willingness to work. A few months later, when I asked my therapist if I could look for a part time job, her first question was: “Are you working at the soup kitchen regularly?” When she learned that I had, she gave me her blessing to check with my psychiatrist to see if I was ready for work.
Once I received my psychiatrist’s approval, my job search began. Even though I had experience as a high school gifted instructor, I knew that type of work could harm my recovery. So, I looked for work in data entry and daycares. I first tried applying in the data entry field, but their human resource departments were looking for people with dictation skills. Since that work did not fit my qualifications, I tried looking for work in a daycare. The first two daycares could not fit my counseling schedule, but the third accommodated me with an afternoon schedule.
I was warned that working in a daycare was not “all fluff.” Still I had experience in that day care two years ago, before that supervisor was there. I was given a physical form where the doctor was asked if I had a condition that would hamper my ability to work with children. My doctor paused for a moment at that question, answered the rest of the questions, and then wrote that I was in remission. I was thrilled to be back into the working world.
A few months afterwards, I applied at the local community college to teach Fundamentals of Writing and English as a Second Language. Now I continue to teach at that college part time while also substitute teaching at a local school district. Through all these changes in my employment, I am reminded of Luke 16:10: “He that is faithful in the least is also faithful in much”(KJV).
