Cindy lamented for the hundredth time that day. “Do I stay or do I go?” She prayed again. “I want a drink mommy.” She looked down to see Jacob staring up at her rubbing his eyes with his chubby little fists. Cindy scooped him up in her arms. “OK buddy, let’s get you a drink and then back to bed, OK?” she said carrying him to the kitchen. “OK, mommy.” Jacob yawned. He laid his head on her shoulder and she held him close. How she loved moments like these when he would allow her to cuddle him and inhale the sweet baby fragrance. Usually he was to busy for hugs; there was major playing and exploring to do. She carried him back to bed, careful to step over the toy fire engine in the middle of the floor. She tucked him into bed and kissed his forehead. “Sweet dreams baby.” She whispered into the soft blond curls where she knew his ear was hidden. “I love you.” She said quietly as she pulled the door shut. Jacob was already fast sleep.
As she headed for the living room she thought again about the Credit Manager position and the great opportunity it was. She thought about the better paycheck and benefits. Then she thought about it meaning a move. Cindy felt the familiar pang in her stomach at the thought of that. She had moved so often in her life and she hated the idea of moving again. Her mother had died when she was two. At the time her father had been a Captain in the Air Force so all she remembered about any kind of family life was moving a lot as her father's orders changed.
As she pondered the idea again she thought about the wonderful daycare that Jacob attended. "I could provide better for him” She thought. “But it also means having to find a new daycare and a new church.” Cindy inhaled sharply. “I don’t want to leave my church, Lord, this is my family. Please help me Lord. What do I do?” She prayed in earnest desperation.
She went into her bedroom to change into her pajamas. She lay in bed and thought about taking Jacob away from the only home he remembered. “Oh Lord; how can I do that to him?” She said into the darkness as she stared up at the ceiling. She turned all the questions over in her mind again and exhaled slowly. She let the first tears escape her eyes. She hated crying and as she wiped them away with tissues that she kept on the nightstand; she felt more coming on. “What am I going to do?” She pleaded into the darkness.
As she wiped more tears from her eyes a voice inside her asked “Why do you have to do anything?” Cindy sat up holding the tissue in mid air. She thought about that question for several minutes. “That’s right, why do I have to do anything? I am getting by fine here. I have a nice home, great friends, and a wonderful church that took me in when I had nothing but an unborn child.' Fueled now by these thoughts, she shifted and leaned her back into the headboard. "Why do I need to do anything?” She asked herself. She slowly exhaled, realizing she was holding her breath. “Thank you Lord, for reminding me of what’s really important.” She prayed gratefully. She lay down and drifted off into a sound sleep. She was home sweet home, and she wasn’t going anywhere.
