The sky was gray and heavy as Nathaniel knocked on Mr. Smith’s door. Anxiety gripped Nathaniel as he fingered the small glass bottle in his pocket. Why had he decided to come? Why did his mother let him stay home? Nathaniel hated life if this was how he was supposed to live it.
He stuck his hand in his pocket and touched the second object there. He kept his two favorite toys with him always.
Nathaniel’s breath caught in his throat and his hand instinctively flew from his pocket when the door opened.
“Hello, Nathaniel. Come in.” Mr. Smith said as he led Nathaniel to the living room. “We were just getting started, but we will get you all caught up. Sit down.” Mr. Smith waved his hand at an empty chair. The other guests glanced up and greeted them when he sat down.
“Now Nathaniel we were talking about the story in the Bible when Jesus fed the five thousand men with two fish and five loaves of bread. Do you remember that story?” Mr. Smith questioned.
“Yes.” Nathaniel said, his tone hard. “I’m going to get some coffee.” He stood up assuming that there was coffee because everybody else had a cup in their hands.
The cold of the kitchen tiles sent a chill up Nathaniel’s spine even though he was wearing shoes. The room smelled like coffee and fruit. The platter of fruit sat on a small table to his left, and the coffee stood on the counter in front of him.
He fingered the two objects in his pocket again. “This is where I will do it. I have to get rid of my anger. It’s the only way.”
The cup grew hot as he poured in the coffee. Nathaniel walked over to the platter of fruit. He sighed as he bit into a juicy strawberry. When he had finish a few more strawberries he returned to his coffee. The cup was still.
Nathaniel stared into his coffee cup as he wiped any strawberry remains from his mouth. His eyes widened when he looked again in his cup. The coffee inside began shaking. Was there an earthquake. Nathaniel didn’t feel any thing moving.
As if nothing happened, the liquid stopped moving.
“Nathaniel.” Someone said.
Nathaniel gasped. “Mr. Smith?” There was no answer. “Mrs. William?” He asked feebly mentioning one of the women in the living room. Still no answer. “Who’s there?” he turned in a slow circle trying to spot the speaker.
“It is I. Do not be afraid.” Nathaniel stared into his coffee cup again. The coffee was moving.
“Who are you?” He asked a little embarrassed to be talking to his coffee. Nathaniel glanced up to make sure Mr. Smith or anybody else wasn’t coming.
“I Am.” It replied. “Nathaniel, I am the God of your family and friends. I am the God who lead your ancestors across the Red sea.”
“Oh, That God.” Nathaniel said. “Well, What do you want? I have a mission to complete. I can’t stand here all day.” Anger flashed from his green eyes as he stared at the cup.
“Go back to the living room and listen to what they will say.”
“No.” Nathaniel said flatly as he grabbed the small glass bottle in his pocket. “Leave me alone. You are no God of mine!” He threw open the glass container and poured the contents into the coffee.
The alcohol mixed with the coffee burned his tongue as he drank it.
“Nathaniel? What are you doing?” Nathaniel spun around and stared into the face of Mr. Smith.
“Nothing that concerns you.” Nathaniel smiled and crushed the cup in his hand. “Well actually it does concern you.” He pulled the second item out of his pocket and held it against Mr. Smith’s neck. “This will be quick and painless, I promise.” He smiled again.
The knife flew into Mr. Smith’s neck before he could reply. Blood covered Nathaniel’s fingers. He pulled the dagger from Mr. Smith’s neck and he slumped to the ground staring in shock at Nathaniel, then at nothing. He was dead.
Satisfaction covered Nathaniel from head to toe. The warmth of the blood was comforting. He walked it to the living room, happy. “Nobody move.”
