“It’s okay, we have all night!”
Four giggly girls crowded onto one of two double beds in their second floor motel room one late summer night. Well, four girls – really, there was a mom, her two daughters, and their roommate from college. The mother had brought them to a particular woman’s conference for the weekend, and that evening had been the opening session. The leaders sent them to their rooms at the end of the night with the weekend’s packets, with strict assignments to fill out the Spiritual Gift questionnaire before the early morning session.
The three bubbling young woman lay on their stomachs, heads bent in a circle over their papers, bare feet crossed in the air behind them, talking and laughing as they read the questions out loud, enjoying their special time together. The smiling mother, watching their delight in such fun, intimate fellowship, joined in the comments, questions and clarifications.
“Oh, that one that is SO you!”
“I’m really like that?”
“Um, yeah, all the time!”
On a scale of one to five: where do you fall into place if you were in this situation? Or how strongly do you feel about this idea? Or how often do you do such-and-such? This was old, familiar ground to the mother and her girls – this idea of spiritual gifts; but it was totally new territory for their friend. She would be exposed to a lot more that one weekend than she ever imagined.
“Yeah, you have to put at least a four on that one.”
“What about this one?”
“Definitely a zero.”
Bursts of laughter filled the tiny room.
“Shh…” The mother hushed them, still smiling as they clapped their hands over their mouths, smothering laughs, yet sparkling eyes. “We’re gonna have some unhappy neighbors.”
Raising her eyebrows at the silent glances that shot between the three young women, another exploding round of laughter broke the hand barriers and they buried their heads in their arms; she shook hers in a hopeless, sighing laugh.
“Oh, my cheeks hurt!”
“My head hurts!”
“I’m so tired!”
Yet the fun overrode the pain of the late hour.
“Come on girls, we’ve only just begun! We have 10 more pages left to do!”
“Oh!” Cries of amazed distress added to their giddy delirium.
Such sweet fellowship in those tender hours – the happy mother smiled again. Ah! What dear memories they were building.
But they didn’t know it then. No, they wouldn’t know for years to come.
