Mr. Tengi Okido would very much have wished that he would heave a sigh of relief and if possible applaud himself for a job well done. But whenever he remembered his children and how they related with people especially those close to them, his heart ached.
Tengi came from a polygamous family and this threatened to affect him psychologically, emotionally and mentally. The first two ladies he proposed to, did not help matters. The ladies did not want to marry any man from a polygamous home. It took him five years before he summoned up courage to propose to Nelly. When Nelly accepted to marry him, he practically pledged his life to her. For Tengi, everyday was lovers’ day and Nelly was a queen to treasure till death do them part.
Tengi’s father married four wives and had twenty four children. He abandoned them at some point when he could not cope with their upbringing. Tengi’s mother struggled so much to ensure that her children were educated.
Tengi, determined not to let his mother down, pushed on and emerged as Eastern Bank’s managing director with time. Having been through tough times with his mother and siblings, he promised himself that his family would have a better life. He was always ready do anything for Nelly and the children. Well, with his good job, he could afford to attend to their demands and the ones he could not attend to immediately, he would put “in view.”
The children, Oto, Mardi and Kogi grew up selfish, thinking that everyone was to be at their beck and call and that love was all about receiving and not sharing. As they were growing up, Nelly tried to caution Tengi. Tengi told her that they were just kids and that when they grow up, they would know better. They grew up and did not know better.
Oto, the first child could not keep friends. He was always falling out with his friends and ending relationships, especially with ladies. He did not know that it takes the people in a relationship to make it work.
Mardi’s focus was to find a man who would tremble and be totally at her service. “Well, would you say it was her fault?” she was very pretty and so she seized every opportunity to use it to her advantage. She did not know that the 21st century men look for women that are assets and not liabilities.
Kogi managed to get married but his wife has had nothing but misery. Three years ago, she stopped celebrating their wedding anniversary and lovers’ day. She told him that it would be unreal to celebrate since he did not have a hint of what it meant to love. She would have left him but for Tengi’s intervention.
It disturbed Tengi greatly that his children were on the wrong path. But one day, he had a revelation that his children ought to have an encounter with the True Love, for only He can make the difference in their lives. It became clear to him that he had spent his time doing the wrong thing - worrying. He realized that what he needed to do was to ask the True Love to intervene in the lives of his children.
Peace flooded his heart and he knelt down and prayed.
