Watching children play is a fun thing to do. They can be so creative and serious in their playtime. They have imagination that seems to be endless. They also imitate without being conscious of doing so. They send and give messages oftentimes with, or without having to say a word. Just talking about children and their imagination reminds me of some of those times during my younger days many years ago.
My parents went to church a lot and they took me, my sisters and brothers with them. I remember some of the bible stories we learned from the Sunday school teacher as she read from the storybook that she held in her hands. After she finished reading the story, she would ask us to repeat back to her what we had learned. I remember trying to paint a picture in my mind about the story as she read to us. My mind was the television playing out the scene as the Sunday school teacher read the story.
I remember also as the minister preached his sermon on Sundays, I would sit there and try to paint a picture in my mind of what he was preaching about. Every Sunday there was a new picture to see and create in my mind. I remember looking forward to going to church on Sunday, so I could see what picture my mind would create from the Sunday school teacher’s stories and the preacher’s sermon.
Afterwards, sometimes, my sisters and I would pretend to have church there at home. I was taking piano lessons at the time and pretended to be the lady who played the piano. Just like the lady at church. We also had a hymn book at home too. So, my sisters pretended to be the choir. We found songs in the hymn book just like the ones we sang at church. One sister decided that she would be the preacher. We had an old TV stand with no television on it that we used for the pulpit. We were busy imitating what we had seen and heard at church.
We raised our hands and made sounds just like the older ladies did in church. I remember the energy we put into our efforts because we were serious about what we were doing. It seemed as if we were in anticipation of something special happening that we were not sure of. After a while though, when we had tired ourselves out with our antics, we eventually went on to something else. I remember the good feeling we had from our pretence and playtime. Maybe it was because the time had been spent giving earnest praise to the highest king.
