Prepare a Guest Room

Our dear friend, our sister, Victoria, in the small group that meets in my home each Thursday night always thanks God for us, for our faith, and that the love between us was like that of sisters. For some reason our love gave her great joy and encouragement. Our girlfriend group decided that we would only respond to any need, within or without, on the basis of love. With the twists and turns that life brings we decided that the hearts of the Christians, and those who aren’t yet, needed to be refreshed.

The next Tuesday, I was sitting in a mall people watching and I met an elderly man named Homer. We started up a conversation about the different colors that people are giving to their hair. There are many shades of red, blonde, purple and blue. We talked and smiled about the rainbow of personalities coming out in their hair color.

Then Homer and I talked about his son. He was Homer’s very heart. Trent had left home angry when he was 17 years old and Homer hadn’t been in contact with him in the last five years except a few short, sporadic calls to say he was ok. I told him it would be my pleasure to ask for prayer for him in my small group of sisters girlfriends if it would be a comfort to Homer. Homer welled up with tears. He said that his prayer for his son has been that the Lord would use this time to bring Trent to Him so that if they were to be separated here for a time on earth they would be reunited forever. I told Homer we would be praying for him and for Trent. I told him, “You might want to prepare a guest room. You may have your visitor soon.” He asked me what I meant by “prepare”. I told him maybe a Bible in the version The Message on a table. It could be opened with Matthew 11:28, 29a underlined. It says ‘Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me.’ Maybe get him some warm socks for winter and some sweats. And pray for him each day at the chair where the Bible is.” He said that sounded like a great idea. We both parted ways know the Lord was working in Trent’s heart.

As our small group met this Thursday, we each discussed our week. I told them about Homer and his prayer need. My sisters and I prayed for him, for the Lord to refresh and encourage Homer and that Homer’s guest room would be occupied by Trent shortly. And the most vital prayer was for Trent to come to know the Lord. As I told the group about Trent and Homer, Victoria remarked how endeared they both had become to our group. She told us the best way to encourage a friend is to carry a bit of their burden and that’s what our group was born to do.
