The Tender Soot

On my first day at work, as a student counselor in a school, I sat eagerly in my room waiting for students who needed help. I knew this was a big challenge for me, as I would require to cater to various needs of the girls there. Many girls just came to see me out of curiosity and some just wanted to make friends.

As I sat there getting to know them, a tender looking teenager entered my room. She was a soft and a timid child. Her eyes spoke a lot of expectations and she sat with me for a long time speaking her heart out. I was immensely moved by her story and sat listening to her with tears in my eyes. I promised to be a good friend to her and she came to meet me everyday. She had found a new friend, with whom she could share her pain and fears. And even I became very fond of this tender soot.

She would sit with me every morning to share her childhood traumas, lack of love and friendship and the problems she faced with her classmates because of her timidity. She was a shy and a fearful girl and her classmates took advantage of her innocence.

Every session we would end it with prayer, with lot of reassurance from God’s word and words of encouragement to mold her. I desired to see her as a confident and brave girl who would be capable of handling her fearful adversaries.

Her dependency on me increased a lot, and I feared that it should not create other problems, when I would go after my short tenure at school. I kept reaffirming her that Jesus was her best friend for life. And only He will come along with her for lifetime.

Within days I saw radiant changes in her, as I saw a lot of cheerfulness and joy in her eyes. Her voice had a new confidence now and our sessions ended within two month’s time.

I was happy that our sessions ended and she had outgrown her shortcomings, but I missed her greatly. Yet she would drop in everyday to greet me. I was happy for her, yet my happiness was short–lived as I came to the close of my tenure. I had to part with tears in my eyes with a few of my closest students, and I longed to spend a good time with her before I left. But she didn’t turn up that day. I knew that she was disappointed, since I was leaving. I left for the day with a heavy heart. It took me months to forget the pain of parting. Yet I know that now she would be a confident and brave girl and that Jesus would be her best friend.
