She stood at the front door, propped ready to leave; but almost as if an afterthought, she asked, “Mrs. Sims, have you ever asked Jesus into your heart?”
I was dumbfounded!
How dare she?
Anyway, how old was she; to be so rude as to ask an adult stuff like that? Grade four – how old are you in grade four?
Well she deserved putting in her place for being so impertinent and I was just the one to do it.
“Well, I’m a Christian, if that’s what you mean!” There that should put her right.
“Oh are you? You never seem like it.” And she had jumped off the porch and headed for home.
I stood holding my front door, startled by the truth this child had spoken. I closed the door slowly and stood in the hallway, completely confronted. My heart lay bare before me. The realization of my condition amazed me.
This child, this little girl from grade four, my daughters’ friend, knew more about the important things in life than I had ever been able to grasp. She spoke about things eternal and they resonated throughout my sin soaked being.
I didn’t know what else to do. So in the same manner as she had spoken to me; as I stood in my hallway, I said, “Lord Jesus would you come into my heart?”
I waited. No flash of light. No great voice. Nothing immediately tangible happened; but the sense that things COULD change seeped into my soul.
The greatest fear rushed back to meet me. What if I gave my heart to this Jesus and I imploded. What if there was really nothing of me, I had no heart to give, no heart for him to enter? As I walked down the passage to my room and sat on my bed, a fullness came into me. I felt complete, whole, clean, for the first time in my memory, I felt at peace. I sat there.
For many years I had been broken and in torment. This little girl could never have known the depths of the despair, but she turned up at just the right time with exactly the right challenge for my eternal wellbeing.
She had been friends with both of my daughters for several months and had spent many hours with us, sharing her love of Jesus and telling us about the Holy Spirit. All for which we had mocked and taunted her.
She had persevered with us and had even invited us to go to church with her. Along the way I had allowed my girls to go and their report was, “They don’t just talk about Jesus there, they know him.” Eventually I thought I should check it out, in case they were ‘off the wall’ (not that I could have ever recognized it – so far off the wall was I), so we all visited her church.
This little girl is now in her mid thirties, leads music with anointing and works at the local Christian school.
Everyday evangelism in action – how I love her, she is our true friend.
