TITLE: "Don't you want to get an ice cream?" | Previous Challenge Entry

“Let’s go for a walk!” I said hoping my enthusiasm would persuade them.
“It’s too hot,” they moaned in lethargic voices.
“We could walk to the shop and buy ice cream.”
With that they were up and hunting for their shoes. When we finally all had our hats, shoes and sunscreen on we set off for the shop that was half an hour away. My six year old brother Tom and nine year old sister Vera seemed happy to be out, the promise of ice cream seemed to give them energy they hadn’t had while lying on the lounge a few minutes before.
However, a short while into our journey the heat was wearing us down. We were walking more slowly.
“Wait under this tree a few minutes, in the cool.”
After a break we had energy again and continued on our way.
“Woof! Woof!”
Tom ran over to pat the dog behind the fence. He played with his nose and ears, as the dog licked him. Then they both sat down and seemed to be getting comfortable.
“How long will they sit there?” I wondered to myself
“Tom,” Vera said “ Don’t you want to get an ice cream?”
Straight away the dog was forgotten, and once again we were on our way with renewed excitement. We passed many houses, some with trees in their front yards overhanging the street, making our walk cooler. Others with no shade, which meant we were plodding along with scorching sun on our backs. We came to the track that led to the river. Tom started walking down it, he loves going to the river.
Vera reminded him again. “Don’t you want to get an ice cream? That’s not the way to the shop.”
Like magic the interest in the river disappeared. When he remembered the reason we were out for a walk Tom didn’t want to go down the river track. He wanted to keep walking straight ahead.
The shop was a long way for little legs to walk in the heat so we had a few stops along the way. Eventually Tom was getting tired and grumpy. He wanted to go back. We were only 10 minutes away; Vera and I didn’t want to go straight home after coming so far. Tom started walking in the direction of home. We pulled on his hands to stop him, but he resisted. He was tired; it was time to go back.
“Don’t you want to get an ice cream? We’re almost at the shop.”
Again he remembered why we were out and his tiredness was overtaken by the thought of the treat. So, once again we resumed our journey. It was not long before we could see the ice cream shop. The sight of it was enough to keep us all focussed and excited- we could almost taste it!
As brothers and sisters we need to keep reminding each other of the reason for our journey and of our final destination. Sometimes we may get distracted or weary. We have each other for encouragement so we can walk along joyfully together.
