I like a certain type of music in worship. I’m sure you have some preference about music also. Whether it’s slow or fast, loud or soft and reverent, we all have our own ideas. Some like full orchestral music some like a piano or organ.
I grew up with a set schedule of service. Always 2 songs and a prayer, not too long a prayer, then a sermon of 20 minutes. A song or 2 more to rounds out the hour allotted for Sunday services.
How often do you like to take communion? Do you want many little cups of wine or one big one? I like matzos used, but I once knew a congregation that used tortillas. Some like to use real wine, others think that’s sending a wrong message.
Then there’s the giving. Many give a tithe, some give a third, and some give as little as they think will be acceptable. I may give my money, but don’t ask for any of my precious time. I share my old clothes; give $1 to a beggar, but asking me to share my home for a Bible study is too much.
Who are we worshiping anyway? Are we worshiping ourselves? Perhaps we should ask Him what He wants in worship instead of what we want. The Old Testament is for our learning. If we do things only to please ourselves we sound a bit like Nadab & Abihu (Lev. 10:1-2). Then there is the warning of Rev 22:18-19. Read the Book for yourself, God is pretty plain spoken.
We all need to strive to please the LORD with our public worship as well our private lives.
