Shocked could described the moments I stared at the timer on the bathroom counter. Surprised could describe my reaction when yes, two lines appeared on the pregnancy test in my hands.
I love children and couldn’t wait to have some of my own. But as a natural reaction for a first time expectant mother I was petrified and for the first time in my life speechless.
I stared at those two lines on the pregnancy test, those two lines that would change my life forever and for a moment I could almost envision laughing at me. My silent thoughts were noisily interrupted by a door slamming downstairs.
I gasped. “He’s home already. But it’s early. I am so not ready, at least not yet.” I whispered a silent prayer for God to stall my husband for just a few moments longer. Then suddenly out of nowhere the telephone rang.
“Saved by the bell, well ringer anyways,” I whispered. “I didn’t forget you either God.”
Quietly I straightened up the bathroom and made a last minute scan for anymore incriminating evidence.
“Honey, I’m home,” a loud voice boomed. “Where are you?”
“Upstairs,” I replied. “In the bath....I mean bedroom.”
Strong and inviting arms quickly grabbed me from behind. I seized still holding the pregnancy test in hand and attempted to move the object behind my back.
Unfortunately, my husband’s eyes were much quicker than my hand.
He gazed at me, “What’ve we got hear?”
My cheeks burned, “Well huh....nothing....at least nothing important.”
I gasped for air shaking my head no while his was nodding yes. The inquisitive and intelligent character of his police persona was overwhelming so I finally conceded and handed the pregnancy test to him.
Questionably he glanced at the object and then back toward me. He was struggling to make sense of the two pink lines he observes. He opens his mouth to speak and instead of words, a dull thud is heard.
My husband is known to be a man of few words but this is utterly ridiculous. Instead of hearing words I am now observing a 200 lbs policeman lying on our bedroom floor.
I am unsure of whether I should laugh or cry. I suppose this just wasn’t the reaction I was expecting.
So I yell, “MAN DOWN.”
To my relief my husband starts to stir and unknowingly quickly falls into his police persona. “Whaa.....where.....who’s hurt,” he questions.’
“That’d be you dear,” I laugh. “Although instead of MAN DOWN next time I’ll suggest HUSBAND DOWN.”
He climbs to his feet, pulls me into a warm embrace and a gentle lip lock. “We’re pregnant. We’re going to be parents. I can’t believe it. We’ve got call my parents, your parents....so much to do.”
“Whoa slow down, please,” I whispered. “We’ve got nine months for all of that remember.”
He smiled, “I supposed you’re right. It’s just so exciting, so overwhelming, so sudden, so....”
“So unexpected, so surprising,” I suggested.
He nodded, “You took the words right out of my mouth.”
“Where do you suppose we should begin,” he continued.
“How about one day at a time,” I pondered. “And with a prayer of thanksgiving to God.”
“Beautiful and intelligent,” he whispered. “I love you so much.”
The next few months consisted of expanding waistlines (my husband’s included) and excited preparation of our new arrival.
I’d just arrived at home after a routine doctor’s visit and a sonogram of our soon to be new arrivals. Yes, I did say arrivals... I just found out were having twins. Now I just had to figure out how to tell my husband.
I closed the door behind me. “Honey, I’m home.”
He raced into the living room. “How’d the doctor’s visit go? Is the baby a boy or girl?”
“Um, well you might want to sit down for this,” I suggested.
He questioned, “Why? What’s wrong? Is the baby okay?”
“Actually it’s not baby but rather babies,” I said. “How would you like to have one of each?”
He muttered, “Babies?”
His one word response was followed by a dull thud on the floor.
“Honey,” I whispered leaning over his fainted figure.
Shaking my head I muttered, “Score Babies 2 and Husband 0.”
I sighed I suppose I’d better wait to tell him he’s my birthing coach.

There was a section in the middle when you went to present tense, although most of the story was in past tense. A few minor punctuation errors, easily fixed.
The image of your big policeman hubby on the ground--twice--is amusing and fun.
