“Peek-a-boo!”

My baby's lips widen into a gummy grin each time I pull my hands away from my face. His eyes and mouth open wide at the sound of my voice as if to say, “I didn't expect that!” Again, I cover my face then pull my hands away with a happy “Peek-a-boo!” Once more, he looks surprised and delighted, “I didn't expect that!”

My two-year-old joins in the fun. He knows what's coming and squeals with delight as he watches me. Each time I cover my face he waits with anticipation for the moment when it reappears from behind my hands.

My husband watches from across the room and enjoys the laughter shared by our two sons. He too knows how the game is played. He expects my face to reappear even though he doesn't know exactly when. He knows that I am always there, even when my face is hidden from view. Playful laughter fills our living room as we revel in the joy of a game well-played.

My Christian walk is not a game, but I do see a parallel in my response to God's blessings. When I was younger I was surprised each time I experienced a blessing in answer to prayer. When a financial need was met I thought, “I didn't expect that!” When I experienced healing, my response was “I didn't expect that!” My faith was still shaky. I was surprised that God answered my prayer at all. I didn't always believe that he would truly be there again and again.

As I learned to trust I still behaved as though God bestowed blessings on a whim. I knew that God was pleased to bless his children and was not surprised to see his hand at work in my life. Yet, when his face was hidden I sometimes succumbed to the childish fear that he might never reappear.

My trust runs deeper now. I don't take his blessings for granted. I'm amazed and grateful for all the gifts he has given me, yet I'm not surprised that God knows me and knows what I need. Faith and experience have taught me that he is always there, even when I can't see him. I rejoice with my brothers and sisters in Christ when God blesses them in a particular way. And I laugh with joy when an unexpected blessing pops into my life.

"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11 (NASB)
