I've never called her aunt. She's always been Drue. All of her nieces and nephews have always called her Drue. Drue never had any children of her own, but she was a mother to so many of us while our mothers worked or whenever they were sick.
I remember one Halloween when I was around ten years old and Drue dressed up like a ghost and ran around the neighborhood scaring all of us kids.
I remember when my dad was sick and in a hospital out of town. My mom was staying with him around the clock. Drue left her home and stayed with my brother and I for several weeks.
I remember Drue taking me fishing and baiting my hook. She always told everyone I caught all of the fish when the truth was most of the ones I caught, we had to throw back because they were so small. I remember picking blackberries with Drue and then making blackberry cobblers.
I remember Drue teaching me how to cook chili. I still use her delicious recipe.
I also remember Drue teaching me how to play cards. Drue was full of patience and skill.
I remember all of the funny stories Drue would tell when we had family get-togethers. I remember one of the first Thanksgiving dinners I ever prepared and Drue was there for the feast. After the dinner Drue led us all in a game of leapfrog.
I remember watching Drue do so many things that most women could not do when I was growing up. She could fix any vehicle. She had the reputation in our small town of being a class A mechanic even though this was not her profession. She could also build anything you wanted or needed if you could show her a picture of what you wanted. She would attempt to do almost anything. She enjoyed a challenge and didn't mind hard work.
Most of all I remember the unconditional love Drue has always had for me. She has never judged or seemed disappointed in me.
As she lays in her bed now, I wonder does she know how blessed my life has been by her being such a big part of it. As I remember all the ways she has touched my life and I tell her I see just a glimmer of a spark in those sky-blue eyes. She remembers too!
