Steven’s best friend Tom spoke to his Bible study group. “As most of you know, Marla recently had a hysterectomy, due to some serious health problems and several miscarriages. She and Steven desire so much to have a baby, but their financial situation makes it impossible for them to adopt, so they’re really having a hard time right now. And the fact that my wife, Elaine, is pregnant doesn’t help, I’m sure. Let’s pray…”

Willing her hand to turn the knob, Marla entered the room. She was on a mission, encouraged by Steven, to finally put this behind her. It had been too long, but she just hadn’t been able to make herself do it until now. No one should have to do this. Smells of powder and lotion assaulted Marla’s nostrils. With teary eyes she scanned the room, knowing it would be just as she had left it. Fighting the urge to break down, she sat gingerly on the simple rocker, closing her eyes to imagine things that were only a distant dream now. Finally, Marla made herself stand and walk to the closet. Methodically, she placed clothes, toys, and blankets neatly in boxes. She convinced herself that Elaine would be blessed with them, since they had not been of any use to her. It was heartbreaking to give them away when the belongings should have been for her own child. A child that she would never hold.
“Lord, you have to help me,” she fervently whispered. “I can’t do this on my own. Please heal my spirit and help me desire only You…”
