I felt like I’d been caught with my hand in the cookie jar. No, it was more like that time when I was caught out hitting my sister with a stick. My face flushed hot and cold and shivers of fear rode my spine like a roller coaster. There was no escape, no one to defend me. And who’d want to?
I had sped. On purpose. I was running too late to care for the consequences, knowing it was my job was at risk. No consequences could be more embarrassing than this. The irony was I’d only started working once the kids were at school to get rid of the loan on the second car, and now I’d lost that too.
I just wished they’d lift the car out before the media photographers arrived. Otherwise this is a sight that will be etched on the memories of locals for years. It’s embarrassing enough, but to have to live it down for the next two decades would be unbearable.
It’s only by the grace of God that no one was hurt, even me. A bike rider had cycled the other way only half a minute earlier, and two boys had been fishing under the bridge. If only I’d trusted God instead of my obviously wanting driving skills.
Standing here, without a scratch, watching my car being lifted out of a tree top, where it had carefully balanced for the last hour after smashing through the old bridge railing over the river, I knew that only God could wash away my shame in the same delicate manner as his hands had held me safe as I’d clambered out of the driver’s seat and along the strongest branch back to the bridge railing my car had smashed through only moments before.
If I ever regained the courage to climb behind the wheel, the only speeding I’d be trying is God’s speed.

One note - your last section could have been several sentences instead of one and that would make for eaiser reading.
