Often accompanied by Hugh Moore and Great Times, the lead singer of the band, vanished without a trace, except if one were to count all the banners throughout the city with the words, “Go North to Locate Happy Ness”. The signs, left there by the band’s Creator and manager, have so thoroughly insulted fans that they are demanding the inscriptions be removed and that no mention of them be made. Local city officials have obviously seen to this right away lest they anger citizens.
So far the band, currently headlining their nationwide tour, has made do with replacements, some of which include far less talented performers. The latest replacement was a hologram by the name of Counter Feit, whom reps for the band assured fans was “a dead ringer” for the beloved lead singer. What show producers cited as technical difficulties have only allowed Counter Feit a short-lived stint on stage each night landing him the nickname “Temporary” among show-goers. While some were taken in by Counter’s performance, most found themselves longing for the real thing. One of the fans at last night’s show commented to reporters, “It just wasn’t the same. It feels like there is this huge void that nothing and no-one can fill. All we want is Happy Ness not someone similar and definitely not “Temporary.”
The head police officer, a self-proclaimed pessimist, has refused a full investigation into the disappearance of Happy Ness though much more than 48 hours have passed. “I have never personally met a Mr. Happy Ness,” he said yesterday, “therefore I find it hard to believe he exists. Yes, others claim to have met him in the past but I have not hence I daresay, Happy Ness, is an illusion and as such there will be no investigation.”
Some fans have taken to wearing earmuffs and blindfolds to shows, so they do not have to deal with the fact that he is not present. Others have convinced themselves by blocking out reports of his disappearance, buying houses, cars, boats and other extravagant purchases. Yet others, through the mere delusion that they do in fact have their much-loved singer, adamantly keep alive the person of Happy Ness.
However, the question does remain. What is to become of the Emotions after braving the loss of its most sought after member? And can fans survive without Happy?
“Evidently Happy Ness was the best part of the Emotions,” Age New, a PhD scholar bearing the titles of vegan, pacifist and all-rights activist remarked. New also happens to be the very first winner of the Nobulitzer Endorser of Everything Award and dons a tie-dye shirt with twenty politically correct statements about current events to prove it. “Friends, you will be pleased to know that Happy Ness is, in actuality, not missing but in a place known as Self Actualization. Even better, is the news that once you find Self Actualization, all roads will take you to Happy Ness.”
Indeed, this is excellent news but it does beg the question. How does one reach Self Actualization? Age New’s answer, like his directions to locate Happy Ness, is thankfully simple and profound all at the same time.
“Dig deep.”
