Leonora and Ash had made love only three nights earlier. Now she sat on the toilet silently crying. All her hopes were disintegrated. It was nearly a year since they began trying to have a baby. Instead of holding a negative test strip in her hand, she should be nursing a new born in her arms.
In the lounge, Leonora sat in the middle of the floor with her Bible. So many times she’d cried out to God to give them a child. Just a couple of months ago she’d told God that even if her and Ash couldn’t have children, she wanted to be content in her relationship with her eternal Father. This admission made her weep so hard, but she knew that only God could guarantee her eternal life. The last thing Leonora wanted to do was put children above God, though she recognized the possibility of allowing such an attitude to creep in unrecognized.
Through misty eyes she searched for the passage she knew would help her. Another woman, so many centuries ago, had already trodden down this same path. She turned to the first book of Samuel and now bowed before God, praying exactly as Hannah had, “O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to you all the days of his life.* But God, I find it so hard to pray that last part.”
After a long time sitting quietly in the presence of God, Leonora rose up to face the rest of the day, happy.

This is based on a true story. Two weeks after praying this prayer I found out I was pregnant. We had already chosen out the name Samuel, and we did have a boy.
