dew hanging on grass blade and tree
early morning air wafting a light scent
sweet fragrance of summer greets thee
beyond bramble where time stands still
fawn finds shelter and lays sleeping
day after day footsteps softly return
summer’s dreamer in hopes of seeing
bramble’s pathway full of promise
animals follow–dogs, cats, goats, chicks
there to graze in the cool of the day
will there be berries tomorrow to pick?
stained fingers feel the purple plumpness
stock stored away for mid-winter
the work and senses all are savored
picking the last sweetness of summer
sun has done its season magic
fierce tendrils drawn from the earth
twisting, twining, pricking, vining
a berry blessing and not all curse

KJV Genesis 3:18 refers to ‘Thorns also and thistles shall it (the earth) bring forth to thee’ as punishment for Adam’s sin; part of the curse. Blackberry thorns remind me of that, but the luscious fruit that grows between the thorns gives me a strong sense of the Creator’s love.

Except the thorns. Been stuck way too many times.
