Dan hauled out of the hover without question and dove into the alley just in time. Jeff took off just as the unmarked cop hover swept around the corner chasing after him.
Looking up into the darkness, Dan spied a laser flash from the sky and knew they were being tracked down.
“Please keep us safe, Lord!” he whispered, then took off on a run.
“ ‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.’”(*1) Dan’s heart grasped this promise as he and his friend fought to escape impending death.

“How, under heaven, did you two get away from them?” Marissa gasped as Jeff and Dan related the chase to her and the elderly couple at whose table they sat.
“A literal miracle.” Jeff said, shaking his head in amazement. “I really don’t know what happened myself. The whole sky lit up like I’ve never seen and in an instant we were back here and they were still there.”
“What was it?”
All eyes tuned to Dan as he answered in a subdued voice, “It was God, Rissa. He wants us to know that He is greater still than all our massive, top notch technology.”
Everyone was quiet for a moment, then Gramps said, “Well, Dan, think we’re ready for your secret now?”
“What secret?” Dan queried with a puzzled expression.
“Why didn’t you know you were in America in 2013?”
“Oh, that,” Dan chuckled. “Well, it’s a bit unusual, but it’s called a time machine.”
“A time machine?!” everyone breathed, astonished.
“What time are you from, Dan?” Marissa asked quietly.
“I’m actually a Jew from Rome in 94 A.D.”
To put it mildly, everyone was quite flabbergasted.
“2013 in America must be quite a change for you from 94 A.D. in Rome, eh, Dan?” Marissa said, her blue eyes twinkling. “I knew there was something different about you, though.”
“There’s persecution of Christians both there and here.” Dan replied seriously. “The technology then wasn’t even close to what it is here, now. But either place or time people want to make themselves a god - just like when time began in the garden of Eden, and Adam and Eve partook of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which God had forbidden. People reject the one true and living God and try to set themselves up as god.”
Gramps nodded. “You’ve got that right, son. And all our technology hasn’t helped humble us any either.”
For the first time that evening, Grandmother spoke. “Not mean’n to change the subject, but Jim’s been studyin’ that picture of the assassin and he's found some evidence that it’s not you. He’s also called Roger, who’s part of our church here, and asked him to get back here to Washington D.C. pronto to help clear this case with all the suspicion that’s comin’ your way about the president’s assassination.”
“Thanks.” Dan said with feeling. “I appreciate that.”
It was three weeks and many events later that Dan stood in court being tried for highest degree murder.
“Sir, the mark on this man’s forehead is not a bruise.” Declared Roger as the judge refused all evidence and began to indicate the case was about to close. “This mark is the identification symbol for the Rebel Resister’s group. Dan here, has no such identification mark. He should rather be on trial for being a Faith Wrester, Sir.”
“A what?!” the exasperated judge scoffed.
Before Roger could respond, the court room was blinded by a bright light. In seconds it disappeared, but to everyone’s surprise, Dan was gone and in his place was a different man getting up off the floor in confusion.
Finding his voice, Roger announced, “This is your man, Sir.”

“It’ll be hard, Rissa.” Dan cautioned. “It’s not like 21st century high-tech America. We’re simple people who work hard and live in difficult days. You sure you want to be my Jewish bride?”
“Yes, Dan.” Marissa said, looking lovingly into Dan’s face. “I want to go with you. I want to be by your side for the rest of my life. I don’t care where.”
Daniel looked at her long but her gaze did not waver . Finally a smile slowly began to spread across his face. “Then what are we waiting for?” he exclaimed. “Let’s go!”
