We all fall into the pit and throw a pity party for ourselves. If something doesn't go our way, we feel sorry for ourselves. Did you know, there's a telephone in the bottom of every pit? We use it to call our friends and ask them to feel bad right along with us. We invite them to our pity party. But there's a problem with this picture; we can't serve God in the pit.
We all fall into the pits from time to time, and stop serving God. So how do we get out to start serving Him again?
I get out of the pit by using God's ladder of praise and thanksgiving. To get up each wrung of the ladder, I thank God for one thing. Thanking and praising God for things like my home, my family, my friends, Jesus dying on the cross for me, and God love lifts my spirits. And soon, I have climbed out of that pit that sucks me into its depths.
But we do not need the occasion of "the pit" to thank God. Praise is a fun, encouraging thing to do anytime of the day. My mom and I like to go back and forth praising God when we're in the car going somewhere together. Or if we're talking on the phone, sometimes we'll end our conversation just thanking our Creator.
Try this awesome activity with your friends. Praising God is like filling your life back up with fuel. Spend time with God, thanking Him for all that He's done for you. Praising Him always puts me in a great mood, even from the worst pits of despair.
So if you find yourself feeling pitiful, get out of that pit by using the ladder of praise and thanksgiving. Wrung by wrung, praise God until you feel great again. And to God be the glory. Amen.
