Tamar Blalock straightened the wrinkles from her skirt and tried to spit-clean the mud stain from the hem after it was stuck in the car door. She smiled remembering her father’s constant warning; “don’t drive with your dress flapping out the door, just not lady-like.” She noticed the church was beginning to fill up making her feel even more rushed. She hated going to a different church, but moving for her new job required her to make a lot of changes.

“Good morning, welcome! We’re pleased you’re here. Do you prefer close to the action or a quick get-a-away?”

Tamar was shocked by the usher’s welcome. However, it also made her laugh and feel at ease.

“Actually, I would prefer to be close to the action.”

“Oh good, I’ve not had a brave one in a while. How about the organ side this morning, I personally recommend it.”

She sat down feeling at ease when the instrumentalists began to play. She knew the usher’s choice of seating was definitely a good idea. The choir director then had the choir to stand and open the service in song. Tamar listened with her heart to the beautiful hymn. At the beginning of the second verse, the director faced the congregation to add the many voices, all in perfect harmony. Tamar continued to listen to possibly two thousand plus voices. As the chorus ended and the third verse began, Tamar opened her mouth to join the worshippers, everyone seemed to be singing loud and strong, so she too obliged with all her heart she joined in completely off key. She hoped in such a large church no one would notice she was tone deaf. Her flat notes seemed to go against the grain of the entire congregation. She felt people move away from her, giving her the feeling of being under a spot light.

“Now on the last Church, we’re all members of the Joyful Noise Choir, Psalm 98:1 tells us to ‘Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.’

The lady on her left side smiled and took her place next to Tamar as well as the teen on the other side. Tamar knew she was home.
