"I'm sorry. I should have mentioned it to you", Sean, my ex says.
"What time does it start?"
"It starts at 3:00pm, why?"
"You know I don’t want my daughter listening to music that isn’t Godly, watching folks gyrate on the stage like they are in heat and generally act like they couldn’t spell the word morals much less live lives where they would follow them!" I knew he didn’t agree with me and honestly was Raven such a bad influence? I immediately regretted the venom that came out of my mouth.
"Listen, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have made these plans without telling you about it. Do you want her to stay with you?"
"The girl loves Raven, I'm not going to spoil it"
"Ok. You know, you aren’t angry about music and you know it!", and then theres a click.
This is the second time in as many days that's he's hung up on me. Honestly I have no idea what's wrong with him. He's been mad for at least 3 weeks and for as long as I've known him, if he's mad, he waits until I confront him before he will tell me what the problem is. The fact that he acknowledege that something else is going on is miraculous.
It’s hard to believe that just two months ago I was bragging about our relationship to my co-worker. She wanted to know why, since my ex and I no longer were together, did he bring me lunch, lattes, etc?
"Sean and I are much better friends than husband and wife. I think it's because we expect less of each other", I said with a big smile on my face.
"My husband doesn't even bring me Starbucks - I'm jealous"
"Yeah, but you know your husband loves you. I don't know why Sean is so nice to me",
But that was a lie. I knew the truth.
For over 4 years now, Sean and I went through a cycle that neither of us really acknowledged. We fought, made up, flirted and argued, then started the cycle all over again. The process often took months to come full circle, but as sure as my name is Crystal it was inevitable. I tried to pretend, (when things were good) that we got along because we were no longer committed, but I think I knew better. I still loved my husband; opps, ex-husband.
We always had a wonderful connection but the pressure of marriage just didn’t seem possible for us. Since our divorce, the flirting, talking and time spent together was awesome, but whenever reality invaded – everything seemed to crumble.
Today, just talking about the Raven concert that my daughter wanted to attend, I knew that this time had to be different. It wasn’t about music, or a concert, but about our relationship and once and for all I would address the issue head on. We would make a decision!
