As the crowd leaps to their feet, all the stretches, sprints and mental preparation were all worth it for this moment in time. The pavement is hot and marked with victory, the finish line in sight. The opponents are far in the background as she crosses the finish line and hears the crowd scream out in joy.
She ran the race and finished well! And the winner is… the announcer says her name and it sounds like a symphony. As she accepted her trophy for running the race well, she couldn’t help but wonder what the future held. This was the last race of season.
She started making plans for her off season training. Perhaps she’d try basketball or volleyball. She even entertained the idea of taking a season off to relax her body, but quickly dispelled that for fear of getting out of shape and spoiled with free time on her hands. She knew that if she wanted to be the best she had to continue with her normal exercises so that next season she would run all her races well.
We’ve all known someone like our runner. I was friends with many athletic people in school. They would play sports all year. They did it to keep their bodies in shape for the next sport. These people were conditioning themselves so that they would succeed. They’d push their bodies to the limit for one moment of glory. The problem is that once the crowds disappear and the athletes return to the locker room to shower and change, all that they’ve worked for is done. They now have to push themselves again in order to get that same rush and recognition for their achievements. They are constantly working towards lots of little moments. Unless they were going to be professional athletes, what fulfillment did this give them?
This reminds me of people who study their bibles for the answers to the questions in their bible study guides. They know all the right answers and can expand on concordance explanations as if they were theological scholars. Yet, their every day lives did not reflect application of this biblical knowledge.
On the other end of the spectrum we have the people who study their bibles, have quiet devotion time every day, pray consistently, attend church regularly and are involved in the lives of others because they have a strong love for people and want to live a life that glorifies Christ. They aren’t study for a big test or to have all the right answers in the bible study. They have realized their true calling in life, which is to give glory to God.
I know people who exercise on a consistent basis, eat right and are healthy because that’s what they want to do. They are taking care of God’s gift, their bodies. They aren’t doing it because the magazines tell them it’s the latest trend to look good, but because they want to feel good.
Exercising because you want to feel good, just like reading your bible, praying and living a life that glorifies God because you want to glorify Him and because it makes you feel good.
Do we want to constantly run ragged filling our lives with little moments or do we want to live a life of health and happiness which will lead to one huge moment that will last an eternity. What will your choice be?
