Many times, I will take myself out of a game by excessive thinking. This all has to do with what is going on in my head. It also has everything to do with Self 1 and Self 2. The tennis book talks about two “selves” that either battle against each other or work smoothly together inside each athlete. Self 1 thinks and Self 1 does the work.
Unfortunately, most of the time Self 1 hinders Self 2 from doing the work because Self 1 thinks it should be done differently. Self 2 is perfectly capable to act on its own without being yelled at by Self 1 (which should actually happen during practice).
When athletes learn something new, we think about it as we do it over and over again so it gets ingrained in our minds and bodies. Then, when we do it in a game, the appropriate action comes naturally. Self 1 is helpful during practice, but needs to hush up when it comes time for a game. As athletes, we need to turn off our brains (Self 1) during games and just let Self 2 do its thing.
The book calls the turning off of our minds being “childlike.” This concept turned my mind toward my faith. We have all heard it—“childlike faith.” But what exactly does it mean? I think maybe the faith of a child is Self 1 learning as you read God’s Word and do your devotions and the Self 2 (God) working most of the other times. This means that you just relax and let God shine though you as you let Him use your life to glorify Him. This is childlike faith!
Christianity is not a mindless religion. It is a relationship in which we let God work through us as we learn more and become closer with Him.
Our faith pops up everywhere. This is especially true for me in sports. God works through many people in many ways. Be on the lookout for Him always. Then just hush up and let Him work through you (I need to work on this both on the sports field and in everyday life). Self 2 (God) can handle it!
God, please work through me, that I might not get in Your way. Amen.
