“Gone Fishing” conjures up a lot of fishing stories of past years. And in comparison my question, what about fishing stories Jesus refers to “fishing for men.”? Can we come with just as many stories in the latter as in the first group.
For those going on a fishing trip they will spend hours, even days, getting ready. The tackle box needs all the right lures and bait, the fishing rod can’t be tangled and the net may need mending. Nothing is left undone. They will have the best day ever!
To be an avid ‘fishers of men’ we need to prepare with even greater care. The hours spent in prayer and Bible study are not wasted. As they pray the Holy Spirit will prepare hearts and will show where he is at work. Then they can move along side and let the Holy Spirit work through them to bring other to himself.
Once out on the lake, the patience and perseverance of a fisherman is something to behold. A big burly man who is always on the go and must have things done now, can sit for hours waiting for a bite. Then even a small catch is happily accepted.
Being a fisher of men does indeed take a lot of patience and perseverance. We want to see results right away. The Holy Spirit is not in a hurry and at the right time we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up. Being a fisher of men takes time and energy but is worth the effort.
When a “Gone Fishing” sign is hanging on your door, where will you be? Will you be out on the lake catching fish or out in the world bringing men to Christ? There are eternal rewards at stake here.
