Bob was a fisherman extraordinaire; it was his life, since his retirement. He thought nothing of dropping whatever he was doing if someone came by and wanted to go fishing. Heck, he thought nothing of dropping everything and taking someone fishing if they just needed to talk. He said he had learned many a lesson in life trying to catch fish. He fished in the river, but he also fished on the sidewalk or in a store…wherever he was he was fishing. Telling you “everything was going to come out all right, fretting won’t help and Jesus will take care of you.” Bob loved people and wanted to help anyone anytime anywhere. His favorite question was “Do you know Jesus?” He could make you mad enough to spit and then grin at you and ask “Do you know Jesus?” It was like saying just calm down and act like Jesus would want you to act, or saying “Just get over it!” Usually you’d end up laughing with him about whatever had made you mad…but this, taking my baby to the river fishing!
Suddenly the door popped open and in came an excited, breathless 3 year old. “We did it!” He was almost shouting, in his excitement, and his face was glowing. “We caught enough fish for supper and then some” he said. And sure enough here came Bob through the door with the biggest string of fish I had seen in a long time. “Boy they were biting today” he said. He grinned at me and then he looked down at my son…smiling and said, “Why don’t you tell your mom what else happened today while we were fishing?”
Big brown eyes smiled at me shyly and said, “Jesus came into my heart today.” I was overwhelmed, he was 3 yet he understood that Jesus had come to live in his heart…we had talked about it before but he had said not yet mommy. Now he had made that commitment while fishing with Bob.
A few years later Bob passed away, and when I told my 6 year old his comment was “He’s gone fishing with Jesus now.”
Guess what Pat had inscribed on his tombstone…you got it, “Gone Fishing.”
