Topic: Cooking or Baking (01/04/07)
I did a good bit of cooking and baking this Christmas holiday. I fixed several meals for close friends who had difficult challenges at the busy holiday season. I also made breakfast for our couples Sunday school class the week before Christmas. With each meal I prepared I would decide what to fix, then begin gathering my recipes and items I needed for each dish to be included in the meal. One particular thing I had planned to fix was a curried fruit recipe that a friend of mine really likes. I knew what went into the recipe and had already purchased it but I couldn’t remember the exact measurements or how long to bake it. I frantically searched my recipe books and my drawer full of recipes but to no avail. I called my mother but she did not have a copy of it either. I started to just guess and began opening cans and boxes but knew that could be a disaster; so out of sheer desperation I decided I would “google” the recipe as I recalled the name of the dish. To my delight on the very first try I found the exact recipe I was looking for. I copied it quickly and went to work making my fruit dish. When it was completed it smelled wonderful and tasted divine. I was so glad I had taken the time to look up the recipe and not guessed and made what could have been a total disaster. Because I had been diligent in doing the right thing and looking for proper directions I had successfully completed my goal: baking my friend’s favorite fruit dish.

As I was cleaning up and packing the meal to take to my friends I thought about something: How many times do I set out on my daily tasks without consulting the Book all of us should check before anything we undertake? How many times do I think I can figure things out for myself or call a friend or family member rather than going straight to the One who has all the answers? The recipe for all Christians to follow is our Bible. The recipe book that tells us how to live, how to love, where to go, what to do: it is all there if only we take the time to look and study.

Next time you are “cooking” up something in your life no matter whether it is big or small why not take the time to sit down and study The Book that allows our entire life to be something wonderful to behold. Culinary masterpieces require relying on cookbooks full of recipes and helpful hint; likewise a life that is considered a work of art for our Savior requires total dependence on the Bible. It too is full of commands and suggestions for a life well lived. I believe we will find as much satisfaction in the result of each day of our lives as I did in the dish I cooked up for my friend if we will take all our directions from The Holy Bible, God’s recipe book for all Christians.

A wonderful lesson - and I like how you tied your experience in with it. A bit of punctuation editing would help, but this was well done!
